July 29, 2026 – BioConnects New England recently convened a virtual roundtable titled “From Connector to Catalyst: Framingham’s Innovation Opportunity” where Rick McKenna, executive director of the Framingham Economic Development Corporation, led a discussion on the city’s expanding role in the region’s innovation economy and the resources needed to advance its presence and position in the life sciences ecosystem.
McKenna presented Framingham EDC’s vision of the city as a regional innovation and workforce hub, bridging Boston/Cambridge and Worcester and building on its current infrastructure of more than 40 life science companies, major corporate anchors, including Bose, TJX, Ameresco, and Sanofi, and 145 acres of developable land. McKenna cited the advantage of the city’s lower housing and operating costs, in comparison to the Boston/Cambridge/Seaport region, particularly to West Coast and European companies looking to establish a presence on the East Coast. Other advantages include commuter rail transit from South Station and MBTA connections to Marlborough, Southborough, and other surrounding MetroWest communities.
Funding, academic partnerships, and public-private alliances are needed to fully realize the EDC’s objective. BioConnects New England is positioned to help connect Framingham with Massachusetts Life Science Center resources and broader ecosystem partners. McKenna is slated to begin outreach to MLSC, MassDevelopment, and government agencies once initial ideation is further developed.
