One-day workshop ideal for students and graduates entering biotech and biopharma industries

Boston, Massachusetts (1/9/2025) – BioConnects New England (BCNE), a multi-state coalition that aims to connect hubs throughout New England to support existing and establish new biomanufacturing infrastructure as a pathway to increase employment, is now offering Introduction to Flow Cytometry, a workshop funded by the Commonwealth Corporation and its Express Program workforce training fund program.

The one-day, hands-on, and interactive program will introduce participants to the fundamentals of flow cytometry, an essential tool in the biotech and biopharma industries. Hosted at the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Laboratory (BATL) campus at Northeastern University in Burlington, Massachusetts, this six-hour course will provide a comprehensive overview of flow cytometry and its real-world applications for those interested in exploring or entering the field. Flow cytometry is a critical tool in modern biotechnology and is widely used in fields including immunology, oncology, and drug discovery.

Participants will acquire an understanding of cytometry principles, explore their applications in cell analysis, and delve into key aspects of flow cytometry.

The course is ideal for research associates and scientists in the biotech and biomanufacturing fields; recent high school and college graduates exploring the biotech and biopharma industries; current college students pursuing life sciences, biotechnology, or biomedical fields; and working professionals looking to expand their skill set in laboratory techniques and cell analysis. The workshop will equip participants with practical skills for immediate application in research and diagnostics.

Introduction to Flow Cytometry is funded by The Commonwealth Corporation’s Express Program, which provides employers quick, easy access to grant-funding training, helping businesses in Massachusetts to respond to emerging needs.

“Understanding flow cytometry can open doors to diverse career opportunities in biotech, life sciences, and biomedical research,” said Jared Auclair, co-lead of BCNE, interim Dean of Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies, Vice Provost of Research Economic Development, and Director of the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Lab at Northeastern University. “By completing this workshop, participants will gain foundational skills in flow cytometry, making them competitive candidates for roles in research labs, biotech companies, and pharmaceutical industries.”

About BioConnects New England

BioConnects New England is a multi-state coalition dedicated to creating a robust and inclusive biomanufacturing cluster in the regions of Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. This coalition connects hubs throughout New England to support existing—and establish new—biomanufacturing infrastructure as a pathway to increase employment and educational opportunities for underserved regions and populations that have been historically excluded from the biotechnology industry, one of the fastest-growing sectors in New England with national importance.

Created through a Phase 1 Finalist grant through the Build Back Better Regional Challenge in 2021, BioConnects New England has grown to include nine coalition members – The Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Laboratory at Northeastern University, The Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine, Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, The I-195 Design and Innovation District in Providence, Rhode Island, Rhode Island Commerce, The University of Rhode Island, and FocusMaine – and over 40 partners across the northeast
